Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

“Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.  But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.  Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.  Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.  Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:  And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?” (John 11:21-26)

This is the question that the Lord asks us each Lord’s day.  Do you believe in the resurrection that is Jesus the Anointed One?  As we approach the great festival of Easter, the celebration around which the rest of the church year revolves, we confidently answer “Yes, Lord, I believe!”.

Each Sunday is a little Easter, by which the Lord reminds us of that great day when the stone was rolled away to reveal an empty tomb.  But the tomb was all that was empty, for in Jesus’ resurrection He once again filled heaven and earth, the Divine and the Human, exalted in glory, reigning at the Right Hand of God over His Kingdoms of Power, Grace and Glory, forever and ever, Amen!

For those who are empty themselves, lost in the darkness, the only answer this world offers, the resurrection is the powerful Gospel message that because He lives, we shall also live again.  And He sent us His Holy Spirit so we can, in faith, believe this great message of Easter, and take comfort in the promised life everlasting.

When the devil whispers, “Thou art a sinner!”, we reply, “He is Risen!”.  When the world preaches “Doom and destruction!”, we proclaim “He is Risen!”.  When our own flesh is weak, we turn to the cross, by which He won for us salvation, and know that the cross did not defeat Him, but it was on that cross that He defeated sin, death and the power of the devil.  And He did it for you, for all your sins, for all time.  It is finished!

Beloved, there is no greater proclamation for us that the news of the Resurrection of Jesus, for by it we are justified, and like Jesus, we will be glorified.   Just a little while longer on this earth, giving this great news to others who are lost, and then we shall have the eternity of glory with Jesus.  And we receive this now through the Word and Sacraments.  Every Sunday our feet touch heaven.  At our Baptisms we were joined with Him, and with Him we shall remain through His Word and the gift of His Body and Blood.  In the Apostle’s letter to the Romans he gives us the joyous news again:

“If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.  For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—  because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.  The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.”

Rejoice Brothers and Sisters…He is Risen!
